The 10th Edition of the annual Metropolitan Swabou 2017 Summer Cup Sponsorship Handover Ceremony, took place on Tuesday, 4th July 2017, in the Kavango East Region, Rundu at the Ngandu Safari Lodge.
Having reached a milestone of 10 years, Metropolitan Swabou has over the years partnered with the Ministry of Sports, Youth and National Service to give back to the future generation through sports and recreation.
Metropolitan Swabou has set aside N$ 450 000 towards the hosting and organizing of the tournament, while winning teams in the first, second, third and fourth positions are expected to receive prize money valued at N$ 15 000 and N$ 4 000 respectively.
The Kavango East region was selected as an additional region to partake in the tournament joining seven other regions including Oshana, Ohangwena, Oshikoto and Omusati , Karas, Hardap, and the Erongo Region. The Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service through the regional sports directorates have been very instrumental over the years in organizing this tournament to benefit the learners in developing their skills in the netball and soccer disciplines.
The tournament targets Junior Secondary Schools in the U/19 age group division. This tournament has the benefit to unearth and identify talent that could be moulded into good academics and sport personalities with character.
The theme for the Summer Cup this year will be Diversity – embracing and promoting diversity throughout our anatomy as a country, recognising that the range of talents, skills and perspectives that the netball and soccer players bring from various backgrounds and culture is fundamental to the success of Namibia moving forward.
Speaking at the event the Hon. Governor of the Kavango East Region, Dr. Samuel K. Mbambo, welcomed the initiative and uttered the importance of developing at grass roots level saying quote “a happy nation is a healthy nation” unquote.
For the first time after 9 years, the finals will be hosted in Swakopmund on the 15th & 16th of September 2017.
